STEM Online Mentoring Scheme

Run by the STEM Ambassador Programme and Brightside Mentoring we are launching the second national online mentoring scheme.

Designed to help young people explore their future career options in STEM, a six-week mentoring programme is open to 14 – 16 year olds with a 10-week programme for 16 – 18 year olds.

For those across S3 & S4, young people will have the opportunity to focus on career insights and chat to trained STEM Ambassadors via a secure and moderated online messaging system. Those in S5 & S6 will be mentored on ‘life after school’ – whether that’s Higher Education, Apprenticeships or preparing for employment.

Those taking part will receive:

One to one support and inspiration from a DBS or PVG checked STEM Ambassador
Training on how to use the secure and moderated messaging system
Support and resources to help them make informed decisions about their future.
All young people from across the UK are invited to apply, and there is no limit on the number of mentees being able to access the programme from any one school or college. Cohort start and end dates are outlined below: –

Cohort 2: S3 & S4, to run 24th Jan – 4th Mar (6 weeks) – OPEN FOR REGISTRATION

Cohort 3: S5 & S6, to run 24th Jan – 1st April (10 weeks) – OPEN FOR REGISTRATION

Cohort 4: S5 & S6, to run 4th April – 10th June.

Young people interested should speak to either myself or their Guidance teacher.

Parents / Carers – Foundation Apprenticeship Information Session

Foundation Apprenticeship Information Session Tuesday 14 December 7 to 8 p.m.

Skills Development Scotland and the National Parent Forum Scotland are arranging a session on Foundation Apprenticeships for parents and carers on Tuesday 14th December from 7pm-8pm.

This session gives the opportunity to find out about Foundation Apprenticeships, including who they’re for, how they work and their benefits. During this one-hour session the value and equivalency of the qualification in terms of SCQF levels and UCAS points will be explained.  Examples will be given of pupil journeys and it will be shown how Foundation Apprenticeships helped young people into jobs through modern or graduate apprenticeships,  on to college or to university. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

FREE Science Summer School 2022, run at Edinburgh Zoo or the Highland Wildlife Park

Please see opportunity below for the Zoo Summer School.

The application process for our FREE Science Summer School 2022, run at Edinburgh Zoo or the Highland Wildlife Park, has begun. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is now accepting applications for this course that runs within the school summer holidays, and we hope you may share this exciting opportunity with interested students (current S4-S6) before the application deadline on March 7th 2022.

This is a FREE week long course aimed at school students between the ages of 16-18 years who are pursuing a career in science. Run at Edinburgh Zoo or the Highland Wildlife Park over the summer and delivered by a host of zoo professionals including keepers and vets, this is an excellent opportunity for students to gain more experience in research and conservation, whilst adding to their CVs in a fun and immersive manner!

The Science Summer School runs multiple times throughout the summer. This year’s dates are:

Highland Wildlife Park: Weeks Beginning 11th July & 18th July 2022
