Information:
Dalkeith High School’s Art and Design department has been enjoying an extremely successful few years by becoming one of the high attaining Art departments in Midlothian. We are located at the front of the building in Block 3. The department offers pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of exciting and inspirational projects that range from 3-D modeling, Architecture, Fashion/Textiles and many more.There are daily lunchtime clubs and after school clubs to give all pupils, from S1 to Advanced Higher, the opportunity to develop their skills and produce a high standard of work throughout their experience in Dalkeith High School.

Courses:

Art and Design – BGE
Pupils from S1 to S3 will have the opportunity to develop their basic drawing skills as well as enhance their problem solving and analytical skills during exciting and innovative projects in the Art and Design department. Pupils will experience working both two and three-dimensionally with a wide range of materials while covering the E’s and O’s through interesting and unique lessons. They will be introduced to the work of both contemporary and traditional artists and designers to help contextualise their learning in the classroom.

Art and Design – Nat 4 & 5
On this course you will learn to use your knowledge, understanding and skills of investigation and research, develop media handling abilities and problem solving through both Design and Expressive activities. Units of work can range from jewellery or bag design to still life and portraiture. Alongside each unit, a study and analysis of related designers and artists is undertaken.

Art and Design – Higher
The level of work produced is expected to be of a high quality, and for that reason the entry level is high.  You will learn to use your knowledge, understanding and skills of investigation and research, develop media handling abilities and problem solving through both Design and Expressive activities. This could be anything ranging from jewellery, architecture, fashion and textiles to still life and portraiture. Alongside each unit, a study of related designers and artists is undertaken to support and broaden their learning and development in the subject.

Art and Design – Advanced Higher
This course is definitely not for the feint hearted! Candidates are required to conduct both a major and a minor unit of work. There are various combinations that can be undertaken where a pupil can choose to solely specialise in either Art or Design or indeed cover both areas. You will learn to use your mature knowledge, understanding and abilities of investigation and research, develop media handling and craft based skills as well as visual problem solving through Design or Expressive activities. This could be anything from costume/fashion or lighting design to still life or sculpture. Candidates will thoroughly research and anaylyse the work of artists and designers to ensure that they have enhanced their knowledge of the subject as well as broaden their overall experience of Art and Design.
