East and Midlothian League Cup Winners

Well done to our Under 13s football team (S1) who won the East and Midlothian League Cup. It was a thrilling game against Lasswade, which saw our team lead 6-1 at half time. It was a game of two halves as Lasswade came back into the game and managed to score a few goals to bring the score back to 6-5 with five minutes left to play. Thankfully, the team managed to hold on and it finished 6-5 to Dalkeith. The trophy they won is called the Charlie Wood Cup. Charlie was a history teacher here at DHS who then became Principal Teacher of History and he used to run the football leagues for all of the schools. This is the first time Dalkeith High School has won the cup, so it is great to have it here on display.

Grayson Perry Exhibition and Workshop

Mrs Zielinski’s S3 class have been out of school to visit an exhibition and take part in a practical workshop. They explored, discussed and interpreted a range of artworks during the Grayson Perry exhibition at the National Gallery, Edinburgh. Led by gallery staff member Robin and practising artist Morgan, pupils identified and discussed narratives that were communicated through the artist’s use of imagery.

Inspired by the exhibition, pupils then took part in a practical workshop. The session allowed them to begin to explore creative approaches to communicating messages of social importance that impact young people in Scotland and our local community. Following the excursion we will welcome Robin and Morgan back into school to work with us for six weeks on a community project, building on the initial work already explored. We very much look forward to this exciting opportunity and we will ensure we share how things progress with you in the coming weeks.

 

BAE Systems STEM roadshow

S1 pupils were visited by the much anticipated BAE Systems Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) roadshow.  This year the presentation was about exploring from the depths of the ocean to the ends of our solar system.  Pupils took part in two communication challenges and a model of the Sun appeared at the end which filled half of the stage, all the way to the ceiling!
