Course Choice

From S3 onwards pupils personalise their curriculum by making choices about what courses they study.

  • In S3 pupils study eleven subjects – English, maths, a modern language, PE and RME, and six subjects of their choice.
  • In S4 pupils study seven subjects – English, maths and five subjects of their choice.    Each subject will be allocated four periods per week. S4 students will also have core lessons such as PSE and PE.
  • S5 and S6 students will select between five and seven subjects along with wider achievement awards or short courses.  The total number of subjects is dependent on the level of the courses selected.  S5 and S6 students will also have core subjects such as PSE and Health and Wellbeing.
  • All level 6/7 courses will be allocated six periods per week (though some periods of Advanced Higher will be self-study), and all level 4/5 courses will be allocated four periods per week. Young people are encouraged to study English and literacy, and mathematics and numeracy, until the young person’s potential has been fulfilled in that area.

Some courses may be taught at another school in the Authority, or at college, or with a learning provider such as Community and Lifelong Learning so travelling or online learning may be involved.
