Expressive Arts Senior Phase

Topics covered in Senior Phase:

Art & Design

Within Art and Design in the senior phase, pupils learn how to use a range of art and design materials and techniques, produce analytical drawings and carry out investigative studies. They will learn the skills involved in planning, producing and presenting art and design work. Learners will also find out how artists and designers work, and how factors like their environment and culture have an impact on their work and practice.

The National and Higher courses are practical and experimental, enabling pupils to develop and refine technical skills with the aim of producing a portfolio of work in both Expressive and Design. In addition, pupils at Nat 5 and Higher will prepare for a written examination that encompasses a range of literacy skills and analytical questions.

Learners will have personalisation and choice to design and produce a final solution in either Graphics or Jewellery in response to a Design Brief devised by them.   In addition, they will explore a range of fine art media and techniques to refine their drawing and painting skills in a creative and imaginative way following a theme of their choice.

Within NPA Art and Design, pupils undertake three units of work; Illustration, Printmaking and Mixed Media. The course encourages an experimental approach to art and design and allows pupils to explore a range of techniques.

Photography

Photography encourages pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of photographic media and camera techniques. The NPA and Higher course is practical and experimental, enabling pupils to develop and refine technical photographic and editing skills with the aim of producing a portfolio of photographic work. Pupils will develop knowledge and understanding of camera techniques and controls; investigate and analyse the factors that influence photographers and their work; and explore the use of a variety of photographic techniques, technology and processes.

The NPA courses at level 4 and 5 will develop knowledge and understanding in practical photography and digital editing. The course is broken down into mini projects where students will explore four units including Understanding Photography, Photographing People, Photographing Places and Working with Photographs.  Projects are experimental and enable pupils to explore photography skills and ideas in a creative and personalised way.

The Higher Photography course encourages pupils to develop technical and creative skills through using photographic media, techniques and processes. Pupils will learn how to use a DSLR camera for creative effect through a variety of practical learning activities with a focus on learning technical and compositional skills. Pupils will develop their problem solving, analytical and evaluative skills throughout the course.
