Why Study Physical Education:

Learning in, through and about PE enables young people to develop a whole range of skills and personal qualities related to learners Health and Wellbeing. PE is crucial in developing both the physical health and mental wellbeing of all learners in school and is a place where learners should feel safe to engage in physical activity. PE provides learners the opportunity to develop:

  • Personal Qualities
  • Physical Fitness
  • Cognitive Skills
  • Physical Competences

Across the department, we aim to ensure that learning in PE is meaningful to all learners in every PE lesson. To ensure learning is meaningful, our aim is to ensure that teaching and learning in the department is fun, personally relevant, socially interactive, challenging and improves motor skills.

We offer a wide range of activities and courses across all levels to ensure that learning can be accessible and personally relevant to all learners at Dalkeith High School.

Study Club Details:

In PE we offer a variety of extra-curricular sporting clubs. They take place during lunch and after school. These clubs are recreational; however, pupils are encouraged to come along to develop their complex skills and game play. Either staff or senior Sport and Recreation pupils lead clubs.

Excursion Opportunities:

The senior phase Health and Wellbeing is designed for pupils to choose activities outside of school that are of interest to them. Activities include GoApe, golf, skiing, trampolining and water sports. Pupils will spend time exploring the Physical, Mental, Social and Emotional benefits towards their Wellbeing.

During the Sport and Recreation course, pupils will gain valuable skills from the excursions offered with this course. Excursions include Disability coaching, assisting with primary/high school events and running activity sessions within school.

Pupils studying Exercise and Fitness Leadership will have the opportunity to visit local health clubs to experience the daily running of a fitness centre, take part in fitness classes and engage with one to one personal training.

In partnership with Active Schools within Midlothian, there are several sporting events organised throughout the year. These events include athletics, swimming, football, rugby, and golf. Pupils can sign up for these events to compete for Dalkeith High School.
